Guide

The 8 October index moved. It is not a rate you can book here.

On 8 October 2026 Drewry’s World Container Index fell 2% to $4,351 per 40-foot container. Shanghai to Los Angeles fell 3% to $7,624, Shanghai to New York fell 2% to $10,220, Shanghai to Rotterdam fell 2% to $3,337, and Shanghai to Genoa was unchanged at $3,696. Drewry also counted fewer blank sailings on the Transpacific for the following week, and one more on Asia–Europe. Those figures are Drewry’s, for that Thursday. Yihang does not sell them. A quote for your cargo is a separate number.

What changed for a China export

  • East–west container rates eased during China’s Golden Week, on Drewry’s measure
  • Carriers had announced blank sailings. Drewry’s count for the next week was 4 on the Transpacific, down from 11, and 6 on Asia–Europe, up from 5
  • Drewry said a faster return to Suez is the main risk to carrier attempts to lift Asia–Europe rates, after 13 down weeks
  • Drewry expected the index to sit still the following week. A still index is still not a booking

Hormuz is a different file

  • Lloyd’s List counted 124 non-Iranian-linked Hormuz transits in 21–27 September, against 122 the week before
  • September’s 477 such transits were the highest since the conflict began at the end of February, on that count
  • The same brief said container and bulk traffic had not recovered the way crude shipments had
  • A box to a Gulf port is not priced off a Shanghai–Los Angeles index. Say the port on the inquiry

Questions shippers ask

Can I book the Drewry number?

No. It is a market index for a 40-foot container on named routes, published by Drewry for 8 October 2026. Your file has a commodity, a weight, a port, and a week. The desk quotes that.

Does this change a China to USA or Europe plan?

It says the published index eased, and that blank sailings are still being used. It does not change the planning windows on the lane pages. Those remain planning windows.

Will you post the next index?

When a weekly index or a chokepoint changes the routing a shipper has to plan for, a new note goes up, with the source linked. We do not paste a rate and call it ours.
